Haiti - Technology : Official opening of the first Digital Library of the UEH

This Friday at 5pm will ake place the official opening of the first Digital Library of the State University of Haiti (UEH), this space will provide to the 15,000 students, researchers and professors of the UEH access to millions of electronic resources (books, periodicals, online news.).

"The creation of this university structure allows to provide an answer quickly and concrete to the lack of documentary infrastructure following the January 12 [...] This is a very important step for students, researchers and professors from the University of Haiti (UEH)," declared Patrick Weil, director of the organization BSF.

For Vernet Henry, rector of the UEH this library represents "a huge opportunity," indicating at the same time that a system is under consideration to allow teachers and students of other faculties to access the digital library "from their own faculty."

"With the digital library, it is for us at the same time to innovate and improve the service while providing a clear sign that despite the budget problems, the UEH is determined to offer quality service in all its departments. This last option should already be our watchword," declared Fritz Deshommes, Vice-Rector for Research of the State University of Haiti.

This project, result of a collaboration of Libraries Without Borders (Bibliothèque Sans Frontières BSF) and the State University of Haiti (UEH) with the financial support of the Fondation Louis D. / Institut de France constitutes an operational response at the lack of documentary resources encountered by the university community of UEH.

This new building with an area of 100m2 is built in the heart of downtown, on the site of the Faculty of Science, it offers to the students, researchers and professors 60 workstations, all equipped with broadband internet connection. In addition, thanks to the involvement of the University of the West Indies and Guyana and to the support more than 20 publishers and portals partner that open free access to their databases, there are millions of online resources of global excellence (virtual books, online collaborative tools, academic journals and periodicals) which are available to the academic community of the UEH.
