Haiti - Diaspora : An American couple of Haitian origin kidnapped on a bus in Port-au-Prince
An American couple of Haitian origin, members of the First Haitian Baptist Church of Pompano Beach, Jean-Dickens Toussaint and his wife, Abigail Toussaint, (both 33 years old) from Tamarac in South Florida, came to Haiti to see sick parents and attend a community festival in Léogâne, have been kidnapped on Saturday, March 18 while they were on a bus in Port-au-Prince accompanied by a family friend who came to pick them at the airport.
Armed individuals would have forced the bus to stop to board and bring down the American couple and the person accompanying them under threat before leaving with their 3 hostages without being worried...
The kidnappers initially demanded 6,000 US dollars for the release of the couple, but once the ransom was paid after 6 days of sequestration, they decided to increase the amount of the ransom to 200,000 US dollars per person, "We don't have that kind of money," Nikes Toussaint, Jean-Dickens Toussaint's sister, told ABC news.
The U.S. State Department said it was aware of reports of two U.S. citizens missing in Haiti, but declined to provide further details, saying "When a US citizen is missing, we work closely with local authorities as they carry out their search efforts, and we share information with families however we can."
