Haiti - Carnival : Safety and security tips to avoid being a victim

During the carnival period, which is a crowd activity, every year victims of all kinds are recorded among the population.

Some people tend to ignore safety and security instructions.

During this carnival period, the Alliance for Risk Management and Business Continuity (AGERCA) takes the opportunity to share with you some instructions to follow in order to avoid becoming a victim.

Safety and Security Tips:

  • Go out in groups and avoid unsafe areas;

  • Protect children in crowds and avoid leaving them alone;

  • Follow the instructions given by the organizers of the event and the police;

  • Avoid carrying sharp objects so as not to injure others;

  • Leave the red axes free (allowing the circulation of emergency vehicles);

  • Avoid getting drunk during carnival;

  • Respect the designated parking areas;

  • Avoid leaving luggage in cars that could attract thieves;

  • Avoid using glass bottles;

  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol and do not drink it if you are going to drive;

  • Respect the speed limits on the road;

  • Locate mobile paramedics and police reinforcements;

  • Avoid wearing valuable jewelry that could attract thieves;

  • Wear light-coloured clothing to be seen at night, or better still, a reflective vest and a flashlight;

  • Avoid standing in crowds if you have asthma;

  • Avoiding aggressive or provocative behavior;

  • Fasten the seat belt in the front as well as in the back when you are in the car;

  • Put on and fasten the helmet for motorized two or three wheelers, including passengers;

  • Respect the safety distances between vehicles;

  • Avoid electrical wires;

  • Notify the police in the event of observed violent action;

  • Avoid jostling in the crowd;

  • Have a first aid kit in your car and in your home;

  • Avoid standing near musical floats.

These safety and security tips can save your life and the lives of your loved ones if you follow them correctly. You can share them with your loved ones so that they can be made aware of the good behavior to adopt during these festivities.

Happy carnival to all!
