Haiti - Insecurity : Missionary kidnapped, Brazilian nuns assaulted...

"We hoped that the situation would improve, on the contrary, after a break at Christmas, everything exploded again", said Agenzia Fides, Father Antonio Menegòn, Camillian missionary, referring to the recent kidnapping of the Claretian missionary, Father Antoine Macaire Christian Noah, who was going to his community in Kazal (70 km north of the capital in the mountains), on February 7 when he was kidnapped by a band of armed individuals who then demanded a ransom from the local Church...

"Among the latest incidents reported by Camillians in Haiti, a violent attack took place against an institute of Brazilian nuns present in Port-au-Prince. Armed individuals took everything away and used violence against the nuns," continued Father Menegòn.

"Corruption and abuse against organizations committed to bringing aid to the exhausted population has also reached very high levels. Recently, in order to transport one of our aid trucks from Port au Prince to Jérémie, we had to pay the various criminal gangs for each route traveled in order to get to our destination [...] Father Massimo Miraglio, the only Italian Camillian present in Haiti, periodically travels to these mountainous regions. He tries to offer the population a minimum of assistance, he is a parish priest, he builds a school, he will build a clinic and a small chapel. With his group, they travel hours of impassable roads to transport school desks and other basic necessities on the back of mules and reach the most isolated areas of the mountains of Jérémie."
