Haiti - Insecurity : 96,000 Haitians displaced by urban guerrillas

The number of people displaced by gang and urban guerrilla violence in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area has tripled in the past five months, according to a report released last week by the International Organization for migration (IOM).

The assessment, conducted between June and August 2022, identified 96,000 people who fled insecurity in the metropolitan area, due to inter-gang violence, racketeering, kidnappings and broader criminal acts on the population https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-37890-haiti-flash-sexual-violence-a-weapon-used-by-gangs-to-instill-fear-report.html

An early warning system on forced displacement set up by the DTM shows that almost a fifth of neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince were affected by widespread violence in July.

"Thousands of women, children and men have been forced from their homes to seek refuge from violence and destruction," said Ulrika Richardson, UN Resident Coordinator in Haiti. "The United Nations is working hard, hand in hand with humanitarian, government and local partners to help alleviate the hardships faced by many of the most vulnerable families."

The report was produced by IOM's Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), in coordination with the Haitian Directorate General of Civil Defence. DTM assessments provide accurate and regular data on internally displaced populations to inform evidence-based humanitarian action "This data collection represents a critical contribution to the humanitarian response in Haiti," said Michele Klein Solomon, Regional Director of IOM for Central and North America and the Caribbean, adding "This provides insight into the scale, scope and patterns of displacement, which is essential to inform the planning and implementation of evidence-based responses on evidence."

Let's recall that IOM's interventions include the distribution of relief items and medical kits, health consultations and personalized assistance to people with disabilities, as well as a free telephone line offering psychosocial support and orientation services. migrants and internally displaced persons. Additionally, IOM has assisted over 6,400 families with relocation and relocation allowances.
