Haiti - FLASH : Bandits make the law at the Palace of Justice in Port-au-Prince

Occupied since the assault of June 10, 2022 by armed men from the "5 seconds" gang of Village de Dieu https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-36885-haiti-flash-the-palace-of-justice-stormed-by-the-5-seconds-gang.html the Palace of Justice, deprived of its judges and lawyers, has become a new haunt of criminals who dictate their laws...

5 days after the seizure of the Palace of Justice Me Jacques Lafontant, the Government Commissioner informs that arrangements have been made to transfer, on a provisional basis, several services to the Peace Court of the southern section of Port-au-Prince. In particular : the deed legalization service, the complaints service, the issuance of exequatures, the receipt of requests and correspondence from lawyers and litigants addressed to the Government Commissioner.

For its part, "Je Klere" Foundation reports a gunshot wound and 7 vehicles in the hands of the bandits, including 2 belonging to the Public Prosecutor's Office and 2 to the Police. Office equipment such as computers, air conditioners, fans and chairs were also stolen. At the start of the week, we could even see furniture from the Palace of Justice on sale at rue du Champ de Mars with complete impunity...

The Foundation urges the Police and the Army to dislodge the bandits who occupy the Palace of Justice, recover the stolen state property and restore the magistrates to their offices.

The Government officially recognizes that the Palace of Justice is occupied and under the control of bandits, but no one is able to say when the police will regain control of the premises...
