Haiti - FLASH : Armed gangs threaten the water supply of Port-au-Prince

Urban guerrilla warfare between gangs on about 1/3 of the territory of Port-au-Prince since early June https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34065-haiti-flash-1-3-of-port-au-prince-serves-as-a-battlefield-for-nearly-95-gangs.html threatens the capital with "water shortage in the near future" declared Tuesday June 29, 2021, Guyto Edouard Director General of the Directorate National Drinking Water and Sanitation (DINEPA) on a radio station of the capital.

He explained that insecurity and violence did not allow DINEPA to ensure the distribution of water, especially in municipalities such as Bolosse and Martissant, areas which since early June have been the scene of deadly clashes between gangs. Stressing that this situation could cause a shortage of water for the inhabitants of the capital supplied by the Diquini basin.

Guyto Edouard also revealed that gangs had destroyed a pumping station in Roche Blanche, in the Croix-des-Bouquets neighborhood and threatened new offensive actions against strategic infrastructures.

In addition, the blockades of many road axes and armed clashes day and night, prevent distribution companies from regularly supplying fuel to pumping stations in the metropolitan area, forcing DINEPA to have severe rationing which has already affected several sectors, including the health sector where some hospitals threaten to suspend their care services if the situation continues.
