Haiti - COVID-19: There is no crisis between the WHO and Haiti

Friday, April 9, the World Health Organization (WHO) affirmed that there was no crisis between the institution and Haiti after the rejection by Haiti of the 756,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine that the WHO had offered free of charge via the COVAX mechanism.

"There is no crisis between PAHO/WHO and Haiti. Our mission is to provide technical support and recommendations to the Haitian government, which makes its own decisions independently," said a spokesperson at WHO office in Haiti.

Haiti is one of only four countries in the world not to have started vaccinating against Covid-19.

WHO recalls that the distribution of the vaccine, according to the plans of the Haitian Government, will be done in two successive phases : a first delivery of doses to immunize 3% of the population, followed by a distribution of vaccines to be administered to 17% of the population.

As part of this plan, "756,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines, corresponding to the first allocation of 3%, were to be delivered by the end of May to populations identified as priorities by the Haitian government," specified the office of the WHO.

Recall that Haiti is one of the 92 low-income countries that has obtained FREE access to Covid-19 vaccines through Gavi's COVAX AMC mechanism, which, like the rest of the participating countries, has awarded a number of doses Haiti to vaccinate 20% of its population by the end of 2021.
