Haiti - FLASH : Armed attack against the EDH headquarters

Tuesday, March 9, 2021, unidentified individuals opened fire with heavy weapons on the building housing the head office of Electricité d'Haïti (EDH) located at the corner of rue Charéron and Blvd Harry Truman (Port-au-Prince).

In the attack, which caused widespread panic on the premises of the institution, a passer-by who was nearby was shot and killed and an employee injured, while others were left psychologically affected.

In a note, the General Directorate of EDH wishes to underline "[...] the serious consequences of this armed attack on the company's ability to fully play its mission for the benefit of the population. Such barbaric acts can indeed only sabotage the sustained efforts made by EDH to allow the country to benefit from an increased and regular supply of electric current for the benefit of the national economy [...]" calling on the police authorities to strengthen security around company facilities across the country.

Reacting to this attack, the Office of the Secretary of State for Communication on behalf of the Government, "[...] expresses its sympathies to the victims, unreservedly condemns this odious act, and announces that the Haitian National Police and the Commissioner of the Government at the Court of First Instance of Port-au-Prince, are already at work to identify the authors and co-perpetrators, to arrest them and to prosecute these criminals."

This attack would be attributed to members of the "5 Segond" Gang, which operates in the Village-de-Dieu, possibly in retaliation for an unfulfilled request for funds from the EDH...
