Haiti - DR : The Dominican fence at the border will cost more than $100 million

Following the announcement on Saturday February 27 by President Abinader of the construction of a double fence at the border https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-33130-haiti-flash-president-abinader-announces-the-construction-of-a-double-fence-at-the-border.html , Roberto Álvarez, the Dominican Minister of Foreign Affairs, provided some details in particular that this "perimeter fence" envisaged, would have a length of 190 kilometers on the 391 km from the border with Haiti.

He indicated that the Government was negotiating with two Israeli companies and a Spanish one for the construction contract for this border fence "which is, as the President said, is a lemage of physical construction and electronic technology."

Recall that this fence, according to the Dominican authorities, will be double in the most conflicting sections and simple in the other sections. They will be reinforced at the surveillance level, among other things, by motion sensors, facial recognition and night vision cameras, radars, thermal detectors and drones.

The Chancellor added "It could cost more than 100 million dollars in total, it is not an excessive sum and long-term financing arrangements are foreseen [...] The objective is to create the conditions to achieve various objectives. One to facilitate trade, the other to prevent irregular migration, to stop smuggling of all kinds, at the same time guaranteeing coexistence between the two Nations."

Roberto Álvarez stressed that the construction of this fence also aims to regularize the border points of entry and official trade.
