Haiti - FLASH : Nearly 1,000 cameras monitor the Dominican border

In addition to the pilot electronic perimeter project underway in Montecristi by the Israelis https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-32908-haiti-flash-the-dominican-republic-will-test-an-israeli-system-of-electronic-border.html , the Dominican Armed Forces are adding modern electronic equipment to increase control of illegal cross-border trafficking of people and goods.

Thus, 290 new cameras for military surveillance with thermal detection and night vision positioned at strategic locations, are added to the 687* cameras already in place since the end of 2019 (* source, Lieutenant General Rubén Paulino Sem, Dominican Minister of Defense under Medina). Or nearly 1,000 cameras in total.

In addition to this device, there is a fleet of drones equipped with the latest technology and night vision cameras. Some of these drones can stay in the air 24 hours a day powered by a wire connected to the ground, while others are self-contained and have a range of up to 100 km. All these drones retransmit the images of their camera to monitoring stations on the ground or for some by internet, to the headquarters in Santo Domingo

The Lieutenant General of the Dominican Army and Minister of Defense Carlos Luciano Díaz Morfa, assured that the armed forces, mainly the specialized units, continuously improve their strategies, methods and equipment within the framework of the surveillance of the border, which is one of the main missions within the framework of its responsibility to ensure national security.

He said that currently the Ministry of Defense maintains 9,748 troops deployed as part of border surveillance.

The motorized patrol has 128 mobile units and 18 vehicles to patrol very difficult terrain.

The Air Force supports surveillance from its detachments at Cabo Rojo airport (Pedernales) and Dajabón with three planes and 83 members for the air patrol.

At Manzanillo and Cabo Rojo, the Navy conducts naval border patrols with 82 members, 11 ships and 53 crew members plus a detachment on Beata Island.

120 members of the intelligence directorate of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (J2) work for military intelligence tasks.
