Haiti - Agriculture : Record rain deficit for more than 40 years, alarming situation in the South

Globally throughout the national territory there was recorded in April, compared to seasonal norms, a rainfall deficit estimated between 70 and 80% depending on the regions. You have to go back to 1987 to find a drier April in Haiti.

In the Southeast, this is the lowest cumulative rainfall recorded for more than 40 years, a deficit that has persisted since January 2020.

Since March 1, from Fort-Liberté to Jérémie, the rainfall deficit is one of the worst, behind 1983, 1987 and 2005…

Farmers in Limbé, Plaisance, Pilate, Bassin Bleu, Jean Rabel have lost their bean seeds and other crops in the past two months;

The peasants of Léogâne, Fondwa, La Vallée de Jacmel, Jacmel, Marigot, Belle-Anse and Anse-à-pitres totally missed the spring agricultural campaign because of a prolonged drought;

Faced with this serious problem of drought which the inhabitants of the department of Grand'Anse especially those of Jérémie have been facing since December 2019, the parish priest of Sainte-Cécile de Tibelon in Jérémie is raising a cry of alarm and requests the intervention of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and certain NGOs, recalling that this drought which affects the plantations and causes the death of animals, could cause a hunger crisis in Grand'Anse and across the country...
