Haiti - Football : After 6 months of delay, work began at the Stade Sylvio Cator

The Haitian Football Federation (FHF) is pleased to announce after 6 months of delay, the beginning of the renovation works, of repair and modernization of the National Stadium Sylvio Cator under the direction of the Dutch company Edel Grass which has signed a contract last October 22 in Zurich with FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association).

The beginning of work which was to start since October 2010 have been delayed several times because of the national championship but also because of the prolonged presence of the victims and homeless which were installed in the perimeter of the Stadium Sylvio Cator.

Meanwhile, the majority of the 2,000 families who had taken refuge inside, on the lawn and around the stadium, have left the scene but there are still more than 200 families, a presence which makes delicate the carry out of the work for security reasons, because of the highly flammable, thus very dangerous of the materials to be used.

The work should absolutely begin this month for several reasons: first, that the artificial pitch which cost $ 600,000 to FIFA may deteriorate in the containers that are in customs... Then, the preliminaries of the World Cup, Brazil, 2014 for our region of the CONCACAF beginning September 3 this year and any lengthy delay in the work may compromise the participation of our country to this global event.

The work will consist to the replacement of the field installed in August 2004 which was heavily damaged by the installation of the victims... A new lawn of last generation will be installed, consolidation work will be performed in the main building damaged by the earthquake, the sanitary facilities will be rebuilt, especially in locker rooms, the offices that will serve as an annex of the Secretariat and offices of the commission of the competitions that will be modernized and upgraded. Throughout the construction period which will last four months, the Stade Sylvio Cator will remain closed for security reasons and no movement of people, apart skilled workers, will be allowed.

FIFA is also seeking funding to install a new lighting system of 1,200 lux for night matches. Probably the FIFA has not think to contact the company Digicel, which has provided lighting, recently, to the Stadium of Saint-Marc and preparing to do the same in Cap Haitien before continuing its mission to Les Cayes, Mirebalais, Carrefour, Leogane... Unless there is a problem between FIFA and the company Digiciel... What we don't know.
