Haiti - Reconstruction : The private business sector, few interested...

Ronald Baudin, the Haitian Minister of Economy and Finance, spoke this week in Port-au-Prince, on the sidelines of the 3rd meeting of the Working Group on the creation of the investment fund Haiti-CARICOM.

"From an initial amount of $100MM, the fund could reach the billion dollars", precised the Minister of Finance. "This fund must allow to the Haitian businesses to have capital to grow and create more jobs"

For its part, Josseline Colimon Féithière, the Minister of Trade and Industry said that the small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Haiti will have much to gain from the implementation of this investment fund. She said that the Centre Facilitation of Investments (CFI) will play an active part in particular alongside the Haitian businesses, which will be mobilized through the various chambers of commerce.

The former Prime Minister of Jamaica, Percival James Patterson, the Special Envoy for Haiti of the Community of Countries of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) had declared during the previous meeting that "most of the funds would come from CARICOM members, bi-lateral and multilateral agencies, private- and public-sector interests and private donors from the Haitian and Caribbean diaspora"

However, during this third meeting, the Special Envoy has deplored the lack of involvement of the haitian private business sector, in the establishment of the Haiti-CARICOM fund.

The official launch of this fund is planned for Feb. 25 on the island of Grenada.
