Haiti - Security : No withdrawal of Chilean troops in Haiti...

Following a request from the Independent Democratic Union, concerning the maintenance of the Chilean Mission in Haiti, [in the framework of the UN Mission for Stabilization in Haiti (Minustah)] Alfredo Moreno, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, discarded the idea to withdraw the Chilian troops of this country.

He explained that this mission is a long term commitment of Chile and confirmed: "Our commitment towards Haiti will be maintained," adding that the assistance of Chile is essential to help this country that lives in difficult conditions following the earthquake, the cholera epidemic and a bad governance.

The Minister recalled that the work of the Chilean contingent, "was to maintain order and create the conditions so that the country progress." Emphasizing that these advances have been very difficult, because of "the situation in Haiti that remains very precarious," while referring to the political instability and climate of insecurity.

However, Alfredo Moreno said he was open to examine how Chile can better support Haiti "This may mean changes in the composition of the the Chilean contingent, integrating for example, civil engineers and people who can work in ways separate from military".
